ICE RINK HOPES BOOSTED - Lib Dem Council Leader Adrian Vinson says: "It's great news for the city economy that cruise industry giant Carnival, parent company of Cunard and P&O are to set up their new UK HQ at West Quay and that prestigious Lloyds Register Plan to re-locate from central London to the University of Southampton campus.

Not only will these moves maintain and increase high quality jobs in the city, encouraging others to follow, but the Carnival decision will kick start the wider redevelopment of the West Quay area and, through the capital receipt to the Council as landowner, could prove the key to delivering an area and ice rink to the city centre."

Other major recent developments include the choice of a developer for the former Vospers site at Woolston Riverside, planned to create 1000 new jobs, much needed homes, a new library and waterfront access, and finalisation of the terms for the redevelopment of the Tyrrell & Green's site for new arts facilities and homes.

This month also sees the reopening of the City Walls Bridge walk and the illumination of the Bargate, together with regular farmers and arts markets. This year a bigger and better Garden Festival on the Common will be joined by the Sea City Southampton Festival and events celebrating artistic talent in the city.
