Hampshire MP, Sandra Gidley has publicly backed a national campaign to ensure that people aren't left in the cold over Christmas as new figures reveal that over 50 local people have of cold winters in the last five years.
The figures reveal that there were 30 deaths alone between 2007 and 2008.
Commenting today from Westminster, Sandra said:
"Fuel poverty is a really serious issue and one that is too often ignored. It can lead to debt problems, isolation and poor health, which sadly too many do not recover from.
"The winter is a difficult time for many households in Hampshire and across the UK, and with energy prices remaining high it is important to look at ways of improving energy efficiency to bring people's energy bills down and make homes healthier to live in.
"The most important message is that there is help out there for vulnerable households. I urge anyone who may be worried about paying their bills this year to contact the Home Heat Helpline to get free advice on staying warm over Christmas and New Year, without the fear of fuel debt or ill health."
The Home Heat Helpline is available on 0800 336699.
