Sandra Gidley MP is today urging local residents to join her in fighting the proposed hike in taxation on bingo, which fans fear will kill local clubs.
The Government has decided to increase duty on bingo from 15% to 22%, which will only put already struggling local clubs under further pressure.
Sandra Gidley and her Liberal Democrat colleagues were the only major party to back a move in Parliament to halt the increase last month. Despite speaking against it in the Commons, the majority of Conservative MPs abstained.
Now a petition has been launched on the no. 10 website urging the Prime Minister to rethink his position.
Speaking today, Sandra said:
"Bingo is a popular pastime which brings friends and communities together, but Government killjoys just don't seem to understand the threat it's under.
"I have written to the Government on this subject in the past, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears. They need to stop gambling with bingo's future and let people have their fun.
"I hope people will join me in signing this petition and help save this great British pastime."
