Hampshire MP, Sandra Gidley, is today calling for more help to aid those who have been jobless for more than a year, as new figures show more and more people in Southampton and the Test Valley are getting stuck in long term unemployment.
Whilst the figures reveal that local overall unemployment rates remains static, the numbers caught in long term unemployment have risen by 20% in the Test Valley and by nearly 7% in Southampton, in just one month.
The news comes as Sandra and the Liberal Democrats pledge that under their plans, all young people would not spend more than 90 days on Jobseekers Allowance before they get more training, education, an internship or a place on a work programme.
Commenting today from Westminster, Sandra said:
"More needs to be done to help all those who are getting caught in long term unemployment, both here in Hampshire and across the UK.
"Young people in particular are finding it difficult to find work, as many have left school, college or university and simply don't have the appropriate levels of training or expertise to get onto the lowest rung of the ladder. Many simply haven't worked at all before.
"We must help them, and all who are caught in long term unemployment now or they will be left behind in any recovery.
"My party's promise today of more training, education, an internship or a place on a work programme will give hope to the nearly one million young people across the country who currently can't find a job.
"We would also redirect over £3.6bn of spending to creating jobs and building up Britain's infrastructure, helping those who are a bit older too.
"I promise to continue doing all I can to ensure that those who need a helping hand during these tough times aren't left behind."
