AN extra 500 parking spaces are to be created on a Southampton housing estate to tackle a parking crisis.
A rise in the number of cars since council housing went up in Millbrook in the 1950s has led to parking chaos.
Cars and vans are being left on grass verges or double-parked, particularly in smaller cul-de-sacs.
On the back of complaints from residents, housing bosses are to spend £500,000 to create 500 new parking spaces as part of an estate regeneration project, partly funded by council tenant rents.
The groundwork to create the extra spaces is already under way. The first 60 new verge parking spaces should be completed by April.

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Simon Stokes has recently urged the council to address this issue, noting in particular areas of Colne Avenue and Atherfield Road.
'I am pleased to see the council acting on this issue,' he says, 'it is something residents have spoken to me about, and I look forward to hearing exactly where this money will be spent'.
