Southampton's Tory Council has backed down over plans to scrap Southampton Shopmobility, following pressure from the Liberal Democrats and many concerned local people.
Liberal Democrat Group Leader Adrian Vinson says: 'I am delighted the City Council's Conservative Cabinet has had second thoughts and agreed a reprieve for Southampton Shopmobility, recognising its unique features.
Their belated decision to award a grant for a full year to March 31st 2011 and to explore the scope for a shared, jointly funded, scheme with West Quay is exactly in line with the proposal I put on behalf of the Liberal Democrats to the Council's Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee last week.
It is just such a pity that this matter has been so ineptly and insensitively handled, causing such concern and distress to many disabled people.'
