In a keynote speech on Higher Education funding the Business Secretary, Vince Cable, attacked Labour's unfair tuition fees regime. He likened tuition fees to the poll tax. With Lord Browne's review of higher education funding due in the Autumn, Vince Cable wants to see changes to the current system of financing student tuition to make the system fairer.
Vince Cable said, "It surely can't be right that a teacher or care worker or research scientist is expected to pay the same graduate contribution as a top commercial lawyer or surgeon or City analyst whose graduate premium is so much bigger. I am interested in looking at the feasibility of changing the system of financing student tuition so that the repayment mechanism is variable graduate contributions tied to earnings. I have spoken to Lord Browne about this and he has assured me that he is looking at this issue as part of his review."
Vince Cable also highlighted plans to drive reform by allowing new providers to offer higher education to create greater competition in the sector, emphasising teaching excellence as well as research excellence and empowering students by giving them access to far more information about the courses on offer and their prospects on graduation.
