The current political composition in Southampton is:

Southampton Liberal Democrat Group

Achievements & Campaigns:

  • Initiated programme of street light replacement and upgrading throughout the city.
  • Launched an £18.5 millions scheme to reverse years of neglect of our highways. Have consistently put forward the highest funding for road and pavement repairs.
  • Consistently implemented or advocated below-inflation Council Tax increases.
  • Lead the way on campaigning for stronger powers to manage the spread of Houses in Multiple Occupation.
  • Backing the campaign to save the children's heart unit at Southampton General Hospital.
  • Oppose the proposed Millbrook biomass plant on environmental and aesthetic grounds.
  • Played a key part in preventing the Conservative Administration from selling works of art from the City Art Gallery.
  • Championed the new Arts Complex on the former Tyrell and Green site.
  • Launched major initiatives to combat Anti-Social Behaviour, including more City Patrol officers, and better funding for City Safety and the Youth Service.
  • Invested in Improvements to Local Areas, including shopping parades and street cleaning.
  • Opened up all Council meetings so key decisions would be made in public after consultation (since largely reversed by the Conservatives).
  • Campaigned against distribution of free alcohol samples for young people in the City Centre.
  • Increased recycling from 11% to 35% (since declined to 24%).
  • Oversaw essential secondary school re-organisation and initiated primary schools review.
  • Have led the campaign in Southampton for adequate powers to manage the spread of Houses in Multiple Occupation.
