  • Demand Better - Air Quality_ACM
    Article: Mar 22, 2019
    By Southampton Liberal Democrats

Liberal Democrat proposals for a network of Park & Rides in Southampton are a step closer to becoming reality, after Labour and Conservative councillors gave their support to the scheme.

Our calls for a Park & Ride scheme for the city were reported in the Daily Echo last October, and now form part of the "Connected Southampton - Transport Strategy 2040" plans.

As reported in today's Echo, the document also includes proposals for more integrated transport solutions and cycle network.

Southampton Lib Dem Environment Spokesperson Alexander Clifton-Melhuish commented:

"I'm thrilled that the City Council is taking our Park & Ride campaign seriously, and that both Labour and Conservative councillors are getting behind the plans. But until those plans are delivered, Southampton Liberal Democrats will continue to hold the Council's feet to the fire.

"After publicly bickering this week and forcing the Green Charter to be pulled - meaning a delay to projects designed to clean up Southampton's environment and dirty air - I welcome this show of unity in supporting Lib Dem demands for Park & Ride."

"Acting to improve our air quality is not just an environmental matter - the health of some of our most vulnerable residents is suffering through the inaction of this Labour-run council."

Southampton City Council's own figures state that 'over 100 deaths a year in Southampton are attributed to long-term exposure to air pollution'. Young children and the elderly are most affected.

    Bassett campaigner Richard Blackman added:

"Our Park & Ride proposal has been very popular on the doorsteps, and many residents have signed our petition calling for a Park & Ride scheme for the city.

"Residents are also telling us of their frustration that neither the Labour-run council, nor the Conservative opposition, appear to be taking their air quality concerns seriously.

"The city deserves better, and Southampton Liberal Democrats demand better."

    Article: Mar 18, 2019

The Liberal Democrats have today demanded the Conservative Government bring forward a Clean Air Act enshrining the legal right to unpolluted air.

The proposals, set out at the Liberal Democrat conference in York, are based on World Health Organisation guidelines and would be enforced by a new Air Quality Agency.

If successful, the Clean Air Act would also demand air pollution testing took place more widely and frequently, with warning signs displayed in pollution hotspots and sensitive areas, such as near schools.

Speaking after the debate, Liberal Democrat Climate Change Spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said:

"The Tories are just not taking air pollution seriously, despite current levels contributing to diabetes, dementia and heart disease - well as impacting children in the womb and the lungs of children at school.

"It is an absolutely disgraceful dereliction of duty. However, the way things are today are not the way they have to be. People deserve better, and the Liberal Democrats demand better.

"That is why we are calling for real action backed by the ambitious legislation we need to clean up our air and tackle this growing public health crisis."

Southampton Lib Dem Environment Spokesperson Alexander Clifton-Melhuish added:

"According to the Council's own figures, 'over 100 deaths a year in Southampton are attributed to long-term exposure to air pollution', and that young children and the elderly - some of our most vulnerable residents - are affected the worst.

"Yet the Labour administration have time and again ignored opportunities to affect meaningful change to improve the situation.

"Southampton Liberal Democrats fully endorse the motion passed in York, and will apply pressure on the Labour-run City Council to step up and act to protect our environment, and the health and wellbeing of residents."

The Liberal Democrat spring conference in York will today [16\03\19] debate preparations for the European Parliament elections.

The debate follows votes in the House of Commons this week where MPs voted for an extension of Article 50, making it likely the UK will still be an EU member state at the time of the EU elections in May.

The party's delegates will debate calls for the Government to ensure "fair UK representation in the European Parliament".

Speaking ahead of the debate, Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Tom Brake MP said:

"Theresa May, aided and abetted by Jeremy Corbyn, has made an absolute dog's dinner of this Brexit process. It was therefore no surprise that MPs this week voted to extend Article 50.

"Liberal Democrats have been fighting tooth and nail to keep the UK represented in Europe. Given it is now more than likely the UK will still be a member state come the European elections, it is in our national interest to prepare for them.

"The Party has started putting in place a system which would allow us to select Liberal Democrat candidates. We will be ready to go to the polls with a clear offer; every Liberal Democrat elected is another voice fighting for a People's Vote, with the option to stay in the EU."

This has been a dramatic week in Parliament with Theresa May's Brexit proposals heavily defeated, and a very clear statement that a 'no deal' Brexit must be avoided. It is now clear that Brexit will be postponed, and very possibly stopped.

The future is very uncertain but despite Labour's continued prevarication, there is still a real chance of securing a People's Vote and, indeed, of stopping Brexit.

Coxford campaigner Sam Chapman secured the best Lib Dem result in the ward for over a decade following his campaign in the Coxford by-election, held yesterday.

Sam came a close third - only 219 votes from victory, up from fourth place in 2018 - and improved the Lib Dem vote share by almost 15%.

    Sam comments:

"I'd like to thank everyone in Coxford who voted for me. I'm extremly gratified that so many of the people I met and spoke to over the last few weeks felt able to put their trust in me to represent them.

"I'd also like to thank my excellent team, and Southampton Liberal Democrats, for all their support during the campaign."

    I am fuming.

After Parliament has made clear that they are incapable of agreeing on Brexit, the Labour leadership whipped their MPs to abstain on giving the people the final say.

Every Labour MP who did not vote for a People's Vote tonight have betrayed their members, betrayed their voters and betrayed remainers.

    Is anyone getting deja vu?

It's like January all over again. Theresa May's been beaten again, her botched Brexit deal failing by 391 votes to 242. Parliament's verdict on the PM's deal is abundantly clear, and has been for months - the deal is a flop.

We can't let Theresa May kick the can down the road again. Parliament must not be bullied into voting for a deal that leaves people worse off.

  • Park & Ride plans for Adanac Park (Daily Echo)
    Article: Mar 8, 2019
    By Southampton Liberal Democrats

Southampton Liberal Democats have welcomed the submission of plans for a Park & Ride scheme at Adanac Park on the western outskirts of the city - and are calling for Labour-run Southampton City Council to provide similiar schemes for the rest of the city's residents and workers.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the plans from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust and a private developer propose to make permanent the temporary Park & Ride facility already on the site, as well as the construction of a Health Campus.

The Park & Ride service, as at present, will initially be for the sole use of NHS staff.

Local Lib Dem Environment Spokesperson Alexander Clifton-Melhuish comments:

"It is excellent to see UHS and their partners taking the initiative and investing in schemes like this, as they can have a real impact on health and wellbeing in the city.

"It's just a shame that the Labour-run City Council can't show that level of initiative or imagination.

"We urge Southampton Labour to get behind our Park & Ride campaign."

Coxford by-election candidate Sam Chapman adds:

"Having worked at Southampton General, I know how bad the traffic and parking situation in and around the hospital can be.

"Many of the people I have met on the doorsteps have told me that Labour aren't doing enough for their area, or for the city. That might explain why Labour have failed to win in the ward for years.

"We have also received support for our Park & Ride campaign from residents all across the city.

"The trouble is, Labour aren't listening. We can make them listen, by voting Liberal Democrat on March 14th."

A group of MPs broke away from the Labour Party yesterday. They're not wrong when they say that politics is broken. But the Lib Dems are the answer.

Yesterday, 7 MPs left Labour to form an independent group. I felt they were brave and said I hoped we'd be able to work together.

What I didn't say is I felt the answer to many of their reasons for leaving are addressed right here, with the Liberal Democrats.
