Bassett voters from all parties are backing the local Liberal Democrats' Richard Blackman to stop the Conservatives in the ward.

This year voters from across the political spectrum are getting behind the local Liberal Democrat team as the only chance to stop the Conservatives in Bassett.

Only the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats have ever won a Bassett council seat.

Locally voters know it's a choice between fresh ideas and energy with Richard Blackman, or four more years of the same old with the Conservatives.

    Richard says:

"I believe that a councillor's job involves listening just as much as it involves doing. I want to make sure all can be heard.

"My promise to you is that if I am elected, I will aim to speak to every household in the ward over the four years of the term."

A vote for the Liberal Democrats means a local champion for our area and no more rewards for Conservative complacency.

The recent Coxford by-election showed that there's a real appetite for a strong Liberal Democrat councillor. Our vote share increased by 15%, one of the biggest swings in the City Council's History.

If Elected what would Sam and the Lib Dems do for Coxford?

We will work to deliver a council tax freeze in the city. Residents pay more for less under Labour and we want to change that.

Once again, Labour-run Southampton City Council is ranked in the bottom 10% of councils for recycling levels.

The City Council has been ranked 311 out of 345 local authorities in terms of recycling rates.

The independent report finds that the city recycles less than 30% of our waste. In contrast, Liberal Democrat-run Eastleigh Borough Council sends more than 41% of its household waste for recycling.

    Shirley candidate Alexander Clifton-Melhuish

"As a result of campaigning efforts and TV shows like Blue Planet, people are increasingly aware of the impact we have on our environment.

"It's frustrating to me, and many people I speak to on the doorsteps, that our Labour-run council appears to be doing very little to improve our city's impact on the world.

"As part of our efforts to improve recycling levels in the city, Southampton Liberal Democrats have committed to introduce a food waste collection service in our fully-costed Alternative Budget for the city.

"Successive Conservative and Labour administrations have failed to improve our recycling levels, and they should be embarrassed when they see the Lib Dems next door in Eastleigh doing so much better than they are."

Portswood Honorary Alderman Adrian Vinson put forward our alternative proposals at the City Council's budget meeting in February.

    Adrian says:

"Labour's budget is once again predictably conservative, necessitating an excessive Council Tax increase. The Conservatives once again offer fantasy finance, while their Government continues to pass the buck to local councils.

It's time to demand better for Southampton - elect Lib Dem councillors on 2 May to fight for your local community.

These past few months have been nothing short of a national humiliation.

For nearly 3 years, the government has used a wafer thin referendum majority to sow division in our towns, our cities and even in our families.

Richard Blackman has been selected once again as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Bassett in the local elections on 2nd May.

Richard said "I am delighted to be standing as your Liberal Democrat candidate in Bassett. I have lived in Southampton for nearly eight years, so I know and understand the people and area well.

"Many Bassett residents are concerned about our environment, the future of Southampton, and the direction our country is taking.

"As your councillor I would be a voice for our environment, strong community links and a close relationship with Europe."

Long-time local campaigner James Read has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Portswood in the local elections on 2nd May.

James said "I am delighted to have been chosen as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Portswood this year. I have lived in Southampton for almost 20 years, and have campaigned in Portswood for over a decade.

"In the past I have campaigned to improve roads and pavements, against fracking in Southampton, and against leaving the European Union. Today I am campaigning for our environment and against school and social care cuts. These are seriously threatened by Brexit, which I see as the biggest threat to our future as a country, and why I am actively campaigning to retain our place in Europe."

Following the votes in the House of Commons tonight, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Vince Cable said:

"Parliament has now taken back control and the UK is on course for an extension to Article 50 and European Parliament elections.

"Brexiters are losing the argument and losing votes in the Commons by healthy margins.

"The Prime Minister must now show leadership by offering a People's Vote. It is her only chance to get her deal through Parliament and a crucial opportunity to show the changing will of the public, who are swinging firmly behind Remain."

Concerned residents have highlighted some worrying road safety issues around Bassett Green Primary School, in particular the absence of a lollipop man or lady and lack of action by Conservative councillors to get one reinstated.

Richard Blackman and the Liberal Democrats are working to bring back a lollipop man or lady and secure further road safety improvements in the vicinity.
