Southampton Liberal Democrats are delighted to announce our candidates for the snap General Election on June 8th this year.

Whilst Labour and the Conservatives have been caught napping following Prime Minister Theresa May's surprise call for a snap General Election on Tuesday, Southampton Liberal Democrats have already confirmed our candidates, and are on the front foot with our campaign to deliver meaningful change for the people of Southampton.

Eleanor BellEleanor Bell has been selected to contest the Southampton Itchen seat, whilst Thomas Gravatt will represent us in Southampton Test.

Eleanor has a wealth of experience, having worked locally in Further and Higher education, and the NHS.

A committed internationalist, Eleanor has worked overseas in Sri Lanka, Canada and France, and has always felt at ease with the multiple identities of British, European, and global citizen.

An experienced campaigner, Eleanor has spent 12 years in local government at Parish and District Council level, including a period as Portfolio Holder for Environment, Planning and Transport.

Eleanor says: "I will be campaigning to protect local NHS services, elderly care and mental health provision from Tory cuts, and maintain essential funding to our schools and children's services. As a committed activist on climate change and renewable technologies, I want to safeguard the environment and clean up Southampton's polluted air. And of course I am campaigning for the UK to maintain our relationship with the European Union."

Thomas GravattSince getting involved in politics, Thomas Gravatt has worked directly on both the Witney and Richmond Park Parliamentary by-elections. He has also taken an active role in local politics here in Southampton, particularly in the Portswood area and at the university.

Thomas' political interests include opposing the 'Snoopers' Charter' brought in by the Conservatives, and addressing the root causes of inequality that lead to issues such as homelessness. He is also an advocate of electoral reform. Recently he has been campaigning against Theresa May's Hard Brexit and has been carrying out a survey of Southampton residents' views towards Brexit.

Thomas says: "Neither the Conservatives nor Labour are doing enough to reduce inequality in our society. With all the cuts to disability allowances, schools and universities, and with the government's refusal to force multinationals to pay their fair share of tax, it's time for real change.

"Only a vote for the Liberal Democrats will produce any change at all to the status quo. It is also vital that we get a good deal from Europe - by backing the triggering of Article 50 and giving Theresa May a blank cheque over Brexit, Jeremy Corbyn has harmed this country. We need an alternative to Labour and the Tories - the Liberal Democrats are that alternative"

The Liberal Democrat campaign is in full swing in Southampton.
