New Leader of the Liberal Democrats Vince Cable MP has today visited Southampton, and this afternoon spoke to a packed audience of local party members.

His visit to the city included a meeting with the manager of the Society of St James, the homeless charity based in Bedford Place, before being given a tour of the facilities available there.

The Liberal Democrats have long held ambitious policies aiming to end rough sleeping in the UK. Commenting after his visit today, Vince Cable said:

"It is a scandal that last year there were over 4000 people sleeping rough on the streets in our country.

"It was great to meet with the Society of St James today to discuss the vital work that they do, helping some of the most vulnerable people in Southampton and across Hampshire.

"The Liberal Democrats are committed to increasing support for homelessness prevention, and adequately funding both emergency accommodation and supported housing."

Later, at the members meeting in the overflowing function room of the Slug and Lettuce, Vince Cable spoke to the enthusiastic crowd about his ambitions for the Liberal Democrats, as the only party committed to maintaining our place in the single market, and to give people of the UK the option of an 'Exit from Brexit' after the negotiations have concluded.

Local party Chair James Read said:

"It was a great honour that Southampton was chosen to host Vince Cable today. We had over 150 people here today, on a weekday afternoon, to hear him speak.

"Vince has long been one of the most respected politicians in the country, and our local team of Liberal Democrats are enthused and determined to ensure that the Lib Dem fightback continues apace under his leadership."
