Southampton Conservatives in 'Racism Storm'

November 13, 2017 11:00 PM
By Southampton Liberal Democrats

Responding to allegations on BBC News that members of the Conservative Party in Southampton colluded to cover up allegations of racist comments made by a Southampton City Councillor, a Southampton Liberal Democrats spokesperson said:

"These are very serious allegations made against members of the Conservative Party; not just the Southampton City Councillor named in the complaint, but also those senior Councillors who were apparently made aware of the complaint but failed to take issue with it.

"Southampton Conservatives must be given the opportunity to respond to these claims, and Southampton Liberal Democrats invite them to do so. They must then investigate these claims fully, and follow whatever internal party procedures exist to find out exactly what happened, and if any further action must be taken.

"If these accusations of racial prejudice and cover-ups prove to be true, we believe the Councillors in question should face the consequences of their actions, or inaction. And when the people of Southampton go to the polls in May next year, they must consider carefully in whom they choose to place their trust."
