By Southampton Liberal Democrats

Coxford campaigner Sam Chapman secured the best Lib Dem result in the ward for over a decade following his campaign in the Coxford by-election, held yesterday.

Sam came a close third - only 219 votes from victory, up from fourth place in 2018 - and improved the Lib Dem vote share by almost 15%.

Sam ChapmanSam comments:

"I'd like to thank everyone in Coxford who voted for me. I'm extremly gratified that so many of the people I met and spoke to over the last few weeks felt able to put their trust in me to represent them.

"I'd also like to thank my excellent team, and Southampton Liberal Democrats, for all their support during the campaign."

Sam added:

"It's clear that there is an appetite in the city for political representation beyond the stale Conservative and Labour parties.

"Southampton Liberal Democrats will build on this result, and carry forward our momentum into the City Council elections in May."
