A surge in support in the European Parliamentary elections for the Liberal Democrats in Southampton - up 16% from 2014 - to 22% means that we are now the largest anti-Brexit party in the city.

With the Greens on 14% and Change UK on 4% the results also mean that Remain parties in Southampton outpolled the no-deal Brexit backers of the Brexit Party and Ukip by 40% to 36%.

Lib Dems' three new MEPs for SE England Region, Judith Bunting, Catherine Bearder and Antony HookChair of Southampton Liberal Democrats, Richard Blackman, commented:

"I am very pleased with the increase in support for the Lib Dems in Southampton and thank warmly all those in the city who placed their confidence in us. Our clear message of stopping Brexit so that we can focus on climate change, public services and the economy resonated with many."

"I am also delighted that our region will be represented by three high calibre Lib Dem MEPs in Catherine Bearder, Antony Hook and Judith Bunting."

"The argument for Brexit is being lost in Southampton as it is elsewhere. That said, the country continues to face difficult times caused by the incompetence of the Conservatives, aided by the equivocation of Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party. As Liberal Democrats we will continue to advocate the case for a close relationship with the EU and the benefits that that brings to our city and our country".
