Defend Democracy vigil, 28/8/19Southampton Liberal Democrats led concerned citizens in vigil last night, hours after Boris Johnson decided to prorogue Parliament.

Prorogation involves the suspension of Parliament, during which time MPs - our elected representatives - are unable to meet to debate the issues of the day.

Whilst prorogation lasting somewhere between three and seven days happens regularly in the run-up to a Queen's Speech, this time Parliament wil be shut down for five weeks.

Richard Blackman
, who was instrumental in organising the vigil, said:
Richard Blackman
"I'm astounded that the Prime Minister would take this undemocratic course of action, particularly after it was ruled out only last week.

"In seeking to shut down Parliament, he is seeking to shut down debate around his Brexit stance, and to shut down the democratic processes of this country.

"I'm grateful to everyone who joined us yesterday evening, at extremely short notice, to stand in vigil to defend democracy against the autocratic actions of this Prime Minister."

Whilst Southampton Liberal Democrats organised the vigil, it was attended by people from across the political spectrum.

Richard added:

"We stand together to defend democracy. This issue is bigger than us, it's bigger than party politics, and it's bigger than Brexit.

"This action is not about Brexit. If our democratic institutions can be circumvented in this way, on the whims of the Prime Minister and Government of the day, we should all be gravely concerned - Remain and Leave voters alike."

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson [Boris Johnson]Boris Johnson is not fit for the office of Prime Minister.

He is pushing for Brexit that is destructive and will destroy jobs and opportunities. He attacks and demonises people from BAME and LGBT+ communities and wants to take Britain into a close relationship with Donald Trump.
