Full Fact.org - Southampton MP gets trade figures wrongClaims made by Southampton Itchen MP Royston Smith (Con) regarding the Port of Southampton have been labelled 'misleading', 'implausible' and 'incorrect' by the impartial fact-checking organisation Full Fact.

Having already been lambasted for his apparent ignorance in the Daily Echo recently, Smith's lack of knowledge has now been given the Full Fact treatment in an article titled "Southampton MP gets trade figures wrong".

Full Fact have reportedly asked Smith for comment, but have yet to receive a response.

Liz Jarvis, Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate for Southampton Itchen, commented:

Liz Jarvis for Southampton Itchen"You'd think an MP would have a better grasp of the figures relating to one of his city's biggest employers. Unfortunately it appears that Mr Smith has no grasp of the facts.

"The Port of Southampton supports tens of thousands of jobs, and is worth billions to the national economy. It's quite unbelievable that the city's Conservative MP has not done his homework on the subject.

"Perhaps the man once named Parliament's Laziest MP is trying to recapture those glory days?"

Richard Blackman for BassettRichard Blackman, Chair of Southampton Liberal Democrats, added:

"Brexit could prove disastrous for our Port, and yet Smith is comfortable to wave away those legitimate concerns by peddling inaccurate statistics.

"Given his personal support for Brexit, one has to wonder whether he really doesn't know his numbers, or whether he's deliberately misleading his constituents.

"His silence on the issue speaks volumes. Southampton Itchen deserves better."
