City Council Candidate

Sarah Wood

Sarah Wood

Sarah has lived just off Winchester Road for 27 years, and works as a bridge Civil Engineer. She has previously supported former Lib Dem Councillor and Mayor Liz Mizon, and former Lib Dem MP for Romsey & Southampton North Sandra Gidley.

Sarah says:

"Policies on transportation have an impact on all of us. They influence many aspects from travel times, to how we plan our lives to health problems caused by pollution. Having worked as a Bridge Engineer with road designers and transport planners for 25 years I could give a different perspective and knowledge of different solutions for Southampton's transport infrastructure.

"I am interested in wildlife and environmental issues. I won "Southampton in Bloom" "Best Wildlife Garden" six times and now help judge the competition.

"The place where you live is incredibly important for our day to day lives. I would like to help shape this for the benefit of everyone who lives in, works in and visits the city. Like the work I saw by Liz Mizon and others, some of this work may be City wide. Additionally, I will be campaigning for minor changes for individuals on projects that are important to them."

Paul Clarke

Paul ClarkePaul Clarke was born in Southampton, went to school and college locally and studied, at the University of Nottingham and University of Southampton.

Paul works as a local tutor, teaching Maths.

Maureen Turner

Maureen Turner

I have had a long-standing interest in the democratic structures of this country at all levels. I am proud to have served Swaythling residents as a city councillor.

I believe that the policies of the Liberal Democrats have a proven record of delivering efficient and fair local government that is in the best interests of the whole community and would like to work to increase the proportion of Liberal Democrats in the Council.

I have a great deal of experience in education as a teacher and a manager. And also as a Deputy Team Leader of the Bilingual Learners Support Service (now SEMASS).

I have worked in many Southampton schools. I have been a Bench Chairman in Magistrates Courts, as well as chair on various other committees.

Ward Information

Swaythling ward is situated towards the north of Southampton and has a population of 13,900. Neighbouring wards are Bitterne Park, Portswood and Bassett. It is one of the two northern gateways into Southampton, just south of Southampton Airport and is bisected by the railway line.

Shops are sparse on the spacious housing estate which is bordered by Thomas Lewis Way - a major north-south trunk road linking Southampton with Eastleigh. Also running through Swaythling and Mansbridge is the Itchen Navigation Channel which links Southampton with the north.
