Improve our Air Quality - Introduce Portside Power at our Cruise Terminals

Southampton has been independently assessed as being one of the most polluted cities in Europe. Please sign our petition to support our campaign to improve our air quality by introducing port-side power.

#CleanAirNow Adrian FordOne major source of harmful emissions are the cruise liners docked at port. The Liberal Democrats have asked the Council to liaise with Associated British Ports and the Cruise companies to promote the introduction of portside power to Southampton. Portside electric power allows cruise liners to use electrical power instead of using their diesel engines whilst in port. The introduction of shore side power has the potential to reduce pollutants by 90% and green house gases by 50%.

In New York and Los Angeles shore-side power is already in place, as also in Europe in Amsterdam, Gothenberg in Sweden (where emissions have been cut by up to 97 per cent) and the Port of Rotterdam.

Southampton, the UK's biggest passenger port, does not offer shore-side power facilities and is consistently named by the World Health Organisation for breaching air quality guidelines.

Local campaigner Adrian Ford says: "Introducing portside power would make a significant contribution to reducing pollution and improving our city's air quality, and at the same time enhance the image of Southampton as a world class-port."
