Common Sense Prevails on Hill Lane 20mph Zone, But What A Waste of Money!

The Labour administration is seeking to revert 20mph speed limits back to 30mph on several key roads in Southampton.

While we broadly agree with these changes, it’s frustrating to see so much time, resource, and money wasted on reverting these roads after the Labour administration’s poorly planned roll-out of 20mph limits. It was deemed too expensive to put new signage on every road off of Hill Lane and Shirley Road which is why they did a blanket 20mph in the first place.

Cllr George Percival said:

“Southampton desperately needs investment, yet we're seeing scarce resources wasted on poorly planned changes, like the Hill Lane 20mph scheme. These costly reversals satisfy no one and highlight the need for better foresight in our city’s decision-making”

We believe 20mph limits should be retained outside schools, colleges, and other areas where vulnerable road users are at risk. These zones should remain a priority to protect children, pedestrians, and cyclists.
